Northern Stage Rally Championship

  Bulletin 9 – August 2006

The dust has finally settled (literally!) after the Opposite Lock Rally. 26 contenders started the event over 8 mixed surface stages.

For the second round on the trot, the event was won by one of our contenders – Dave Craven (116 points) in his Mitsubishi Evo 6. Great result! Further down the order, contenders dominated the smaller capacity classes. Andy Okane / Phil Clowes (114) lead a clean sweep of the class 1 awards, with Matt Tarbutt (108) in second and Phil & Neil Bruce in 3rd (102) It was nearly the same in class 2 where Chris Platt & Mad Mick Robinson (116) won the class from Steve Hopewell & Kevin Allsopp (111). Congratulations to you all.

Chris & Mick therefore extend their lead in the overall championship and have a healthy 47-point lead. Keith Turner & Steve Ward move into second with Dave Craven moving up to third driver, whilst Chris Purvis slips to third in the Navigator’s Championship.

Chris & Mick now hold an almost invincible lead in the Multi-Use Challenge from Stuart Wilson & Chris Purvis. In fact, only third placed Steve Crowther & David Batley can mathematically catch Chris & Mick but they would need to win their class on the remaining two events AND the class to have at least 41 starters in class on both events – highly unlikely I would say!

 Chris Leeming

I’m sure many of you will already know the sad news that Chris Leeming, the 2002 ANCC Driver’s Champion, passed away after suffering a heart attack during the Opposite Lock Rally. Chris was one of rallyings great characters and a real clubman competitor. He was also a talented and very entertaining driver and mechanic. I’m sure he will be missed by many of us but will have left many happy memories.

 Lindisfarne Rally, 10th September -  www.tynemouthmotorclub.co.uk

The event runs on the Otterburn Military Ranges in Northumberland – it’s a fair trek for many but it’s awesome! There will be 110 competitive miles covering 11 special stages, including the infamous “Althewayroond” stage covering a mega 21.7miles. Regs should be sent next week, although they may be available on the website a few days earlier – so if you want a run keep a look out.

Good luck this weekend down at Twyford.
