Northern Stage Rally Championship

Bulletin 11 – September 2006

The season marches ever onward and I managed my second run of the year on last weekend’s Pendragon Stages, sitting alongside the 2004 ANCC Champion, Richard Wormald, for the first time. The event saw 20 contenders start but it was not a good day for many – Richard and I included – with only half of those starting getting to the finish. I’ve got to say we had a mixed day – the event was different to anything Richard had tackled before and it was a steep learning curve to get used to the ups and downs and hidden surprises at Warcop. We set some reasonably competitive times but also had a few brushes with the scenery that eventually saw us sat on some rather unforgiving rocks on the penultimate stage that sent us OTL. The event also marked the first retirement of the year for Championship leaders Chris Platt & Mick Robinson although they maintain a healthy lead

Fairing rather better was Colin Smithson who took the highest number of points away from Penrith with 102 for 3rd in class one, one point ahead of Martin Farrar & Andy Ward who were 4th in the 2-litre class.  As I’ve already mentioned, Chris & Mick still lead, in fact they managed to increase their lead by 20 points. Keith Turner & Steve Ward hold onto second whilst Stuart Wilson and David Batley move into third spot.

In the Tarmacadam Challenge, 4th in class was sufficient to take last year’s tarmacadam Champions Steve Crowther & David Batley to the head of the field with Garry Salmon & Steve Dargan in second followed by Stuart Wilson & Mick Robinson. There are some close battles for class position in the Challenge – 13 points separate the top three in class two whilst 8 separate the top two in class 3.
