Northern Stage Rally Championship

BULLETIN 12 – OCTOBER 2005

Apologies for the lack of results between the Trackrod and Cheviot events – the Tour of Mull and work got in the way. At least it means that there’s plenty to update, despite rather low contender turnouts on both events. But first, an amendment on the multi-Use challenge. It appears that Dave Everard did not actually compete on the Hall Trophy as indicated on all the information I received from the organisers so Dave is not the provisional winner of the Class 4 navigator in the Challenge this honour goes to Fred Roberts - thanks for the accurate information Fred!

So, onto the Trackrod. 20 contenders started the event. The event followed the BRC event on the Sunday leg, taking in stages in Dalby, Staindale, Cropton, Gale Rigg and Pickering Showground, although unfortunately one of the Dalby Stages was cancelled. Charlie Gabb & Alistair Richardson top scored with 3rd in the 2000cc+ class and, as highest registered contenders overall, they should have won the award for the best Championship crew. Unfortunately I did not check the entry list before I headed off to Mull so I failed to spot that Tim Pearcey & Ian Windress had put themselves down as a registered crew. When they won the event they also walked off with the ANCC Championship award  – the cheek. So, if any of you see Mr Pearcey or Mr Windress, please ask them to pass on their trophies to their rightful owners – Charlie & Alistair – or send me a cheque for £24 to join the championship! Next best score went to Phillip White & John McNichol, 5th in the 2-litre class. Dave Hemingway & Jim Plevey retain healthy leads in the Forest Challenge from Alan Richardson & Christopher Roe.

Onto the Cheviot. Only 8 contenders started this oversubscribed event on the Otterburn ranges – I know it’s got a reputation but if you’ve never been you don’t know what you’re missing – you really should give it a try. There would have been another crew out but Andy Bird / Plug Pulleyn had to pull their entry after rolling on Mull the week before – hard luck. With a no-show from Steven Crowther / David Batley , the finale of the Tarmacadam Challenge came down to shoot out between Mick Davey / Martin Pullan and Mark Thompson / Giles Dykes. Mick & Martin retired (I won’t mention the reason Martin!) and Mark & Giles came home second in class but unfortunately leaving them still 8 points behind Steven & David. If only they could have beaten arch rivals Alistair Hutchinson & St John Dykes, who won the class and deprived them of the extra 9 points that would have seen them take the Challenge by one point. It was that close. Well done to Alistair & St John on a fine 5th overall in less than ideal conditions for 2-wheel drive. Also congratulations to Steven & David on their triumph. As with the Multi-Use Challenge, the Tarmacadam Challenge award winners remain PROVISIONAL (SR16) until the final overall winners are known, but for now here they are…

1st Tarmacadam Challenge : Steven Crowther / David Batley

1st Tarmacadam Class 1 : Stephen Oade & Tim Croft

1st Tarmacadam Class 2 : Dave Hodgson / Cameron Kelly

1st Tarmacadam Class 3 : Mark Thompson & Giles Dykes

1st Tarmacadam Class 4 : Ian Wheatley & Fred Roberts,
