Northern Stage Rally Championship

Bulletin 9 – July 2004

We have had a couple of rounds since the last update as I did not manage to get a bulletin together between the Armstrong Massey Rally and the Opposite Lock Rally due to being heavily involved in the organisation of the latter event. Both had good turnouts with 26 contenders on the AMR and 39 on the Opp Lock.

The Armstrong Massey ran at Melbourne and the organisers, Beverley & District MC were able to offer some changes to the usual stage layouts. It was a good event for contenders, winning three out of the four classes on the event. Top score (112) went to Nick Dobson & Jamie Forest for winning the 2-litre class in their Mark 2 Escort. One point behind was David Duff, winner in the 1600 class, just ahead of Robert Barrett / Gavin Wright who won the 1400cc class.

The Opposite Lock was run by Slaithwaite MC and Huddersfield MC at Manby Showground. Although the event planned to run a mixture of tarmac and loose stages, the wet weather leading up to the event meant that the clay surface of the loose tracks was undriveable and the organisers could not event get a tractor onto them to set the stages up, so the stages were all tarmac. The event attracted a capacity entry but it was Richard Wormald / Dave Hammond that came away with the best score and ANCC Championship trophies for 4th in the 2-litre class (108 points). Next best score, 105, went to Mark Thompson / Giles Dykes, 5th in the same class, and Chris Platt / Michael Robinson, 2nd in the 1600cc class. Martin Kilburn / Tim Buckley were not so fortunate, rolling their Escort three times after clouting tyres. Not to be deterred though, they patched the car back together and continued in the trophy rally with smiles on their faces all afternoon!

With all this going on Nick Dobson has moved into the overall driver’s lead, but only 3 points ahead of Richard Wormald. Chris Peart is in third. Dave Hammond retains the overall navigator’s lead from Gordon Blythe. Jamie Forrest moves into third spot. In the SV Challenge, Richard leads from Mark Thompson and Robert Barrett with Dave leading Gavin Wright and Giles Dykes. The classes are also getting more interesting with John Deegan / Chris Smith (yes, another retirement on the OL!) leading the 1400cc class by a sole point from Robert and Gavin. David Duff and Michael Robinson lead the 1600cc class. Nick leads Richard by 3 points in the 2-litre drivers’ class but Dave Hammond has a healthier lead in the 2-litre Navigators category. Jon and Jane Fox lead class 4 but again by a narrow margin.

HELP!

I will soon be starting the unenviable task of compiling next year’s calendar.  I would be grateful if you could help me in two areas – firstly to ensure that your club has submitted it’s dates for it’s rallies for 2005 to the ANCC Secretary and that any clashes are resolved and secondly to let me know your preferences for events to be included – as long as they are run by an ANCC club they have a chance. I look forward to your comments.
