Northern Stage Rally Championship

Bulletin 11 – October 2004

With two events since the last update and now only one event to go some things have been sorted but most of the awards are still to be decided. But first the latest events….

The Trackrod Clubman’s Trophy Rally followed the Sunday stages of the BRC event using three long forest stages and the two short blasts round the Pickering Showground stage. 20 contenders took the start. Top score went to Trevor and Pam Silcock who guided their Impreza to 5th in class for 99 points. Nick Dobson / Jamie Forrest and Chris Peart / Gordon Blythe kept the pressure on at the top of the Championship. The following week it was down to Manby for the Harold Palin Memorial Stages and can you believe it, Eastwood &DMC managed to run some of the loose in October that was washed out in July on the Opposite Lock – is the British weather going mad?!

Again there were 20 contenders and with many of the top crews failing to finish there were some impressive results for our crews with contenders taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall (Greg Wilkinson / Jonathan Padgett, Richard Wormald / Dave Hammond and Mark Thompson / Giles Dykes) and 5 out of the top 10 positions.  Top score went to Greg & Jonathan, closely followed by the class 2 winners Chris Platt and Mad Mick Robinson (113 points) and Richard & Dave (108).

The result was sufficient to give Richard a decent 50 point lead over Nick in the overall driver’s Championship going into the last round – although Richard can count another score and Nick has to drop a non-finish Richard has never been in the forests and the last round is in Grizedale! Should be an interesting finish to the year – may the best man win. Other possibilities at the top : Mark Thompson could still take the Championship with a good result in Grizedale but so far he has not started a MV event – a similar story for Chris Platt who could still finish 2nd or 3rd overall. Chris Peart and Greg can also both potentially take 2nd or 3rd.

In the Navigator’s Championship one thing is certain - Dave Hammond is now unbeatable and is Champion – Congratulations! Seven other Navigators have the potential to finish 2nd or 3rd – Jonathan Padgett, Giles Dykes, Gordon Blythe, Gavin Wright, Jamie Forrest, Michael Robinson and Steve Ward. I think that this is the most open the overall awards have been going into the last round for many years. Good luck to you all if you take on the challenge of Grizedale.

With so much still to be decided in the overall awards it’s still not certain who will take the SV and MV challenge and class awards until after Grizedale. For instance if Chris Platt, Mark and Richard take overall awards this will mean that Robert Barrett would take the SV Driver’s award. Only in December will all become clear!
