Northern Road Rally Championship

BULLETIN 4. 30TH DECEMBER 2005

With the final two rounds of 2005 now completed, please find enclosed the provisional tables for the championship. These will become final at midnight on 14th January if there are no amendments, so get in touch now if you have any queries. Many thanks to the organizers and marshals of both the last two rounds, the change of date for the Cossack almost certainly took some entries away from the Civil Service Rally, three events in three weekends was asking a lot, as discussed in the last bulletin.

Congratulations to our new champions, Stan Featherstone and Ian Gibbins. Stan held off strong challenges from Dan Robinson and Adrian Green, his consistency proving decisive despite not winning an event outright this year. Ian was definitely the man to have on the maps, guiding both Ade and Dan to victory. Mike Ogram held off a late charge from Paul Taylor to keep second place, both of them will be out to get the trophy off Ian in 2006 no doubt. The remaining ‘top 5’ awards go to Dave Chapman and James Hoyles in the drivers, Dan Spittlehouse and David Taylor in the navigators, well done to you all.

The Novice awards were hard fought as ever and, as there have been so many eligible contenders in 2005, 3rd place awards have been added. In contrast to the overall awards, which are all mixed up due to some navigators ‘tarting around’ with different drivers, the Novices get theirs in their familiar pairs: Paul Blanchard & Ian Poulson from Clitheroe finished top, with a consistent set of results in their first season in the championship. Next up were some more seasoned campaigners, Alastair Crosby & John Thornton from Selby. 3rd place goes to Dan Willan & Heather Grisedale, spearheading a growing group of enthusiastic crews from West Lancs and Cumbria . Well done to all of you, I hope to see you out again in 2006.

Dave Broadley once again takes the ‘Best all rounder’ award, this year fighting off a challenge from fellow Lincs Louth member Dave Wilkinson. That makes it four years in a row for Mr. Broadley, very well done indeed. Nearly as impressive is Beverley’s domination of the Club Championship, this year’s winning margin was the largest yet, the rest of us had better get our acts together and put up more of a challenge in 2006!

Assuming the published provisional awards become final, there is still one award to be decided, ‘Best Event’. As the questionnaires have been a bit hit and miss again in 2005, as last year I have included a voting form with this mailing for you to tell us what you thought of the events you competed or marshaled on. Please get them back to me, either by post or email, by 14th January. Remember the event organizers and marshals put lots of hard work in each year so that we can all go out and enjoy ourselves, so say ‘thank you’ by voting and also telling them what you thought of their event – they can’t correct the mistakes if you don’t tell them what they were!

The Awards Presentation Evening is on Friday 3rd February, at Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre, Cleckheaton, starting at 8pm. There will be a charity auction for a few items of motor sport memorabilia and the special guest is Fred Henderson of Colway Motorsport, always an entertaining bloke to listen to with some colourful stories to tell! It’s free to attend and you don’t have to be an award winner, the more the merrier.

The 2006 championship sees a couple of changes, we no longer have Kent Cams as our sponsor (anyone interested in getting their company name in lights for a very reasonable amount, please get in touch!) and there is provisionally a new event in the series. You should find a copy of the calendar and a registration form elsewhere in this mailing. If your name is printed in red on the enclosed tables, then you qualify for free registration for 2006 and you don’t need to fill in a form, unless any of your details have changed.

Finally my thanks to all the clubs who have put on rounds in 2005 and to you the competitors for coming out and supporting them. I hope to see many of you out and about in 2006.

 Iain
