Northern Road Rally Championship

BULLETIN NO. 3, MAY 2004

May already, I don’t know where the last four months have gone! By this time last year I had done seven rallies – this year I have only done two, and one of those was is daylight…so I am glad to be back out again on the Witch Way. Pendle have attracted a healthy turnout of North Western contenders to this event and this coupled with a lot of publicity on various internet rally forums, has produced a full entry of 60. This has meant a few crews have been turned away which is always unfortunate, but made particularly difficult by numerous entries being delayed in the post. Apparently the post office in Burnley is in a right mess at the moment, which is a pain for both competitors and organizers. My advice to everyone in future would be to post your entry in good time and get in touch with the entries secretary if you don’t get an acknowledgement within seven days. Who knows, carrier pigeon may make a come back as a more reliable delivery method than royal mail!

A quarter of the way through the season and the championship tables show lots of new names with some of our ‘regulars’ yet to make much of an appearance. 98 registrations is very healthy indeed and it is good to see plenty of them out competing and marshalling already. A very strong start to the year for Steve Webster and Roger Hage gives them a clear lead, but there is still a long way to go and they won’t be counting their chickens just yet! Plenty of action in the club championship too, Beverley and Eastwood going neck and neck with Lincs Louth and Matlock also starting the year well. I have included a reminder of the scoring system (not for the clubs, that’s too complicated!) but if you have any queries, please get in touch.

Bye for now,

PAST EVENTS

3RD / 4TH  APRIL, ROUND 3, VK DERBYSHIRE RALLY, MATLOCK MC

One of the ‘wettest rallies in living memory’ from what I’ve heard, but nonetheless a good event and with a strong ANCC contingent both competing and marshalling. Former champion Carl Hawkins took a hat-trick of wins on the event, debut-ing his recently acquired Evo 3, as if he wasn’t quick enough in the Nova….. ANCC contenders filled the majority of the top ten positions with Webbo and Roger leading them home in 3rd. Frank Evans & Dan Spittlehouse had a good run to an excellent 14th o/a and 2nd in class, just ahead of Geoff Henman & Sam Collis on their local event.

As I wasn’t there I’m afraid I can’t tell you much more, if you have any juicy gossip from the event then drop me a line so we can embarrass somebody in the next bulletin! Thanks to Charlie Wheeldon and the Matlock team for putting the event on, to all the marshals and a special mention to Adam Roper for taking registration forms and bulletins down to the event in my absence.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

12TH / 13TH JUNE – ROUND 5, LEGEND FIRES MEMORIAL RALLY, GARSTANG & PRESTON MC

The return of an event that was a championship round a few years ago. 120 miles on maps 102, 103 and 97, with navigation by map references only. No messing around with regularity sections either – this event will include standard sections timed to the second. The start and finish is Myerscough College (102 / 498 399). Regs are available now and should be with ANCC contenders in the next few days, if you don’t receive any then Chris Astley is the man to contact on 0777 927 9918, chrisastley@btinternet.com. Don’t leave it too late to enter, there may be a few North Western contenders up from Wales again for this one depending on how they fare on the Witch Way.

26TH / 27TH JUNE – ROUND 6, T.B.M. CUTTERS THREE SWANS RALLY, SELBY & DMC

A non-damaging route of 100 miles on map 106 is on offer, as this format has proved successful in the past few years. If you like a bit of variety in the navigation then you should come and do this event, hopefully it will be well supported by both ourselves and ANEMMC contenders. To prove that organizers DO listen to competitors, I understand the event will not be finishing at MacDonalds this year! More details in the attached flier, on Selby’s website, www.selbydmc.co.uk or from Entries Sec John Roberts on 01977 683346.
