Northern Road Rally Championship

BULLETIN NO. 1, MARCH 2004

Somewhat belated but nonetheless welcome to the 2004 championship. A particular welcome to the 30 or so of you who are new registrations for 2004, I hope you enjoy what is always a very friendly yet competitive series with a mixture of events to suit all tastes. Those of you who were registered in 2003 but have not yet signed up for 2004, this will be your last bulletin but don’t worry you can still sign up at the start of any of the rounds.

Round 2, Malton’s Ryemoor is upon us already, indeed for many of you reading this it will have been and gone! Hopefully you all got regs so those who wanted to compete or marshal were able to do so. Speaking of regs you should also have received them for round 3, the VK Derbyshire Rally on 3rd / 4th April. If you are planning on entering then do so quickly, it usually gets close to a full entry. Regs for round 4, the Witch Way in May will be out very soon.

The tables after round one are overleaf, good to see some different names up there, it promises to be a cracking year that I reckon will go right down to the wire.

PAST EVENTS

14TH / 15TH FEBRUARY, ROUND 1, BRUCE ROBINSON RALLY, LINCOLN MC&CC

46 crews in all with loads of ANCC contenders thanks to a bumper sign-up session at the start. The event had new Clerks of Course in Mike Angrove and Kev Hutchinson, ably assisted by ‘old hand’ Phil Foster. They put on a great route on maps 113, 121 and 122 including a lot of old favourites for those who know the area – Kew’s Holt whites to start with and Wickenby to finish with the customary trip through Biscathorpe fords somewhere along the way.

The event was generally well received but one problem was in their interpretation of ‘All Roads’ on some of the navigation – it confused the hell out of the experts so my sympathies to the Novices who must have really struugled. You had to ‘ignore gated roads’ to get the nav to work, I don’t know whether this got a good airing at the finish as I had to dash off so didn’t see the results finalized.

With numerous top crews suffering a variety of misfortunes during the event, it was a comfortable win for Owen Turner and Graham Raeburn in the end, but with notable performances from Team Dimbleby in 3rd and  Nicola Hillier & Dave Broadley in 4th, putting the speed of their new Metro to good use and now most definitely experts!

Sorry this is only a brief summary but better than nothing! Thanks to the organizing team and all the marshals for a good start to the season.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

3RD / 4TH  APRIL – ROUND 3, VK DERBYSHIRE RALLY, MATLOCK MC

A traditional Derbyshire event, using a good few whites although this year they claim it will be the smoothest ever. Still you definitely need a sumpguard for this one so if you normally come out in the shopping car and haven’t been to this event before, I recommend you come along and marshal, you will be more than welcome and that way you can see what it’s all about. Regs available now, should have reached you by post, if not contact Simon Randell on 07812 102375.

8TH / 9TH MAY – ROUND 4, WITCH WAY RALLY, PENDLE DMC

Venturing into different territory this year, on maps 103, 104 and 110. Simple navigation by map references only but still a very competitive event . Regs out soon.

12TH / 13TH JUNE – ROUND 5, MEMORIAL RALLY, GARSTANG & PRESTON MC

The return of an event that was a championship round a few years ago. Runs a bit further West than some of our crews may be used to. More details in the next bulletin.

A CHANGE LATER IN THE YEAR….

24TH / 25TH SEPT – NEW DATE FOR EDEN VALLEY’S WESTMORLAND

Not ideal as it is just two weeks after the Danum and clashes with the Mercian, but the best that could be arranged after EVMC had to move away from their Pendragon Stages in July. I am sure it will still be a cracking event and hope many of you will support it. Please note that I am using up my stock of calendars, etc already printed so this change is not yet shown on some of the paperwork you may have picked up.
